Review: Deadly Delivery

Deadly Delivery aims to address a void in the virtual reality space by offering a co-op comedy horror game reminiscent of titles such as Lethal Company. While we have released several games attempting to capture this unique experience, none have truly succeeded, with VR mods for games like Lethal Company currently being the optimal way to enjoy it. The real question is: can the Delivery Goblins provide a package that meets the desires of the VR community?

Best Played With Friends

In this game, you and up to three other players assume the roles of “Delivery Goblins,” tasked with delivering packages to foreboding doorsteps hidden within caves and dungeons. Your mission is to earn gold for the Deadly Delivery Corp, which has imposed a three-day deadline for you to meet your quota. The challenge lies in the fact that these caves and dungeons are teeming with perilous threats. Moreover, failing to meet the quota means you’re of no value to the company—especially since your boss is just as dangerous as the creatures lurking in those dark places.

Every run begins in a preparation zone where you can socialise with your fellow players, wager some of the team’s shared funds, purchase tools that may aid you during your run, or buy cosmetics to change your appearance. From this point, you will also choose the biome for your deliveries and set out to deliver parcels of various shapes, sizes, and weights that will be dropped right outside your door. Each parcel will possess distinct values; however, the greater the value, the more challenging they become to manage. Therefore, it’s a matter of deciding which ones are optimal to select in order to meet your quota within the allotted time.

As mentioned earlier, this isn’t as simple as it appears due to the numerous hazards that lie between you and your customers’ doormats. This is where the fun and challenges arise, as you and your delivery goblin teammates can shift from casually wandering through caves to sprinting for your lives in just seconds – resulting in some hilarious slapstick moments that make you eager to continue playing the game. Your dangers can manifest in various ways, including traps, environmental challenges, or a host of different bloodthirsty creatures that lurk in the maze-like hallways – featuring the likes of Krampus, totems, exploding skulls, mines, and spike pits, to name just a few.

The risks don’t stop here; you also encounter threats from some of your clients. Living in these caves is not for the timid. When you find a doorstep, you set a parcel on the doormat and ring the bell to finalise the delivery. Occasionally, everything goes smoothly, but at times it doesn’t, thanks to the previously mentioned clients – so stay alert with every delivery. Once you’ve finished, gather the gold from the doormat to fulfil your three-day quota, and you’ll receive rewards along with a new quota to tackle in your next chosen biome. However, if you fail, your days as a delivery goblin will come to an end, and they will have no further use for you.

Considering this gameplay loop, which allows for single-player play, it’s evident that the game has been crafted with cooperative play in focus. You can join open lobbies with other players, but to truly enjoy the game, it’s best to team up with friends rather than random strangers – this enhances the fun and leads to those hilarious moments when things go awry, people start to panic, and your friends let out screams.

Perfect Visuals And Simple, Immersive Audio

The crew at Flat Head Studio has truly excelled in creating stunning visuals for the game, resulting in a highly polished appearance. The cel-shaded, comic book-inspired sketches are a perfect fit for the game, adding an extra layer of personality. This artistic choice allows the monsters, your allies, and the surroundings to maintain their appeal from afar, while revealing additional details up close. This style harmoniously complements the blend of horror and humour that the game presents.

This visual style effectively facilitates a smooth transition from the vibrant, colourful sanctuary of your home base and its surroundings to the dark, grimy caves and dungeons. This contrast significantly enhances the claustrophobic atmosphere of the twisting corridors, amplifying the overall sense of dread about what lies ahead. It’s important to note that while the game does feature some jump scares that can catch you off guard, it doesn’t fall into the category of hardcore horror games like Madison VR. Instead, the game strikes a balance by providing a blend of light horror, interspersed with moments of screams and laughter as players find themselves in amusing predicaments.

When it comes to audio, the team has opted for simplicity, which is truly all the game requires. Most of the audio experience will stem from the interactions and antics of you and your delivery goblin teammates. In the home base, you’ll enjoy some light music that enhances the relaxed atmosphere, but once you venture into the caves and dungeons, you’ll be greeted by a general atmospheric hum, intermingled with the proximity chat among you and your team, along with the sounds of monsters as they draw nearer. Additionally, there are moments when your parcels might talk to you; these can range from loud and humorous to whispers that instil doubt about your chances of success. This straightforward approach to audio is ideal for everything the game presents, and I appreciate that they chose not to complicate it further.

The Verdict

Deadly Delivery has introduced a solid co-op comedy horror game to the virtual reality space, reminiscent of titles like Lethal Company—something that VR gamers have been eagerly awaiting. With this in mind, it’s clear that Deadly Delivery is best enjoyed in a co-op setting with friends. While it does provide matchmaking options to connect with strangers, the game truly shines when played with friends, as your shared experiences are filled with screams, hearty laughter, and comedic moments. Although the game includes a single-player mode, it unfortunately doesn’t deliver the same experience, meaning that if you find it difficult to gather friends for a game and prefer not to play with strangers, this title may not be suitable for you. However, for those who can assemble a group, Deadly Delivery is a hilarious, engaging, and cleverly crafted co-op game that will have you laughing, screaming, and eager to return for your next set of deliveries, all while trying to keep your boss at Deadly Delivery Corp satisfied by meeting your quota—and most importantly, staying alive.
