Review: Titan Isles

Psytec Games has chosen to release a new intellectual property in their lineup of VR games, titled Titan Isles, which stands as their most ambitious project yet. The team has consistently impressed with each of their earlier releases, which have progressed in tandem with advancements in VR technology, beginning with the Oculus DK1. The question now is whether this trend has persisted with their most ambitious title.

A Titan Mission

In Titan Isles, you find yourself on the planet Toska, where enigmatic Titans have emerged from the depths, leaving the world in ruins. The fight for survival is very much ongoing, and now it’s your turn to venture out, either solo or alongside a team of fellow Exo Suits, to seek vengeance for your home planet.

Choose Your Exo Suit

As mentioned earlier, you can venture out to confront the colossal Titans either alone or in an online co-op mode with up to three friends. To do this, you’ll need to utilise Exo Suites, with the game providing a selection of four Exo Suites, each featuring its own unique traversal style and weaponry. These include:

Storm—equipped with hand jets, a jetpack, Plasma Pistols, and a Longstrike Rifle.
Hunter—featuring grappling hooks (similar to the movement mechanics in Windlands) along with a bow and arrow.
Goliath—boasting hand burst jets, a Kyros Cannon (which fires explosive liquid), and a protective shield.
Blink—offering triple-jump, wall running, phase-dash, and Viper Bolt (a projectile).

Each Exo Suit begins with a fundamental skill set, but as you accomplish missions, you’ll earn upgrade chips (the greater the difficulty level, the more rewards you receive). These chips enable you to enhance the suits, potentially increasing fuel for improved mobility, upgrading your weapons, and enhancing your suit. This progression empowers you as you advance in your quest to defeat the Titans. During missions, you’ll also collect in-game currency, which is awarded for defeating enemies or assisting in their defeat, as well as for breaking open wooden boxes scattered throughout the world. This currency is used for cosmetic enhancements to your Exo Suits, allowing modifications in various aspects such as colour, light hue, and different sections of your helmet.

As you progress in the game, you’ll discover your favourite Exo Suit. However, I highly recommend trying out all of them and fully upgrading each one to ensure you’ve genuinely found your top choice. I believed I had mine with Storm until I fully upgraded the Goliath. Additionally, if you’re playing online with friends and two of you share the same favourite, there’s no need to worry. Your co-op team can feature multiple of the same Exo Suit; it’s your responsibility to create the ideal team.

The missions will have you navigating the shattered remnants of Toska, eliminating various types of standard sentinels, including drones, turrets, and spider-like robots, all while you hunt for the Titan you must defeat. Afterward, you return to your base to converse with your robotic assistant Quirk and Visker, where you can enhance your Exo Suit and choose your next mission.

One aspect I appreciate about the mission selection is the variety of routes available to choose from. The tiles that compose these routes are procedurally generated, which means the outcome is always a surprise – it’s so intricate that even after eleven to twelve hours of gameplay across Steam and Meta Quest for this review, I’m still discovering new tiles. The combination of procedurally generated levels with the Titans, each presenting unique challenges, along with the option to experiment with, upgrade, and acclimate to different Exo Suits, provides immense replay value – and that’s not even considering all the hidden relics (100), secret areas (32) shootable targets (100) and optional radio towers for some backstory to uncover.

The Pystec team has included a variety of competitive races featuring different objectives. You can tackle these challenges solo to aim for the best times on the leaderboards, or compete against others or friends online for the ultimate victory. In this mode, you will select the Exo Suit for the race (everyone uses the same suit), or you can opt to race without any suit for an added challenge. This provides an additional layer to the game, perfect for those looking to take a break from the story or endgame content.

The Beautiful Vistas Of Toska

If you’ve experienced any of Psytec Games’ earlier titles, you’ll notice that the gameplay and visuals of Titan Isles still embody that distinct Psytec essence, which I truly appreciate. The stunning landscapes of Toska are crafted in a charming cartoon cell-shaded style, enhanced by textures that add intricate details, breathing life into the environment. Each location you explore has its own unique feel, and the world is richly populated, creating a sense of vastness.

Considering the vastness of the worlds and the challenge posed by the Titans that have reduced Toska to ruins, scaling was a crucial aspect. I’m pleased to report that the team has successfully achieved the right scale, allowing you to gaze up at the Titans and truly feel their immense size. Additionally, I appreciate that the world is fully generated and loaded before you enter it, which means there are no loading screens as you navigate your current set of tiles. The draw distance is also remarkably impressive; if you spot some floating sections of Toska in the distance, you will eventually find yourself journeying towards that part of the level. When you combine the visual choices, the scale, and the draw distance, you become fully immersed and are left in awe of these stunning vistas.

The audio harmonises beautifully with the visuals, creating an enchanting atmosphere for the game. The environmental sounds are impressive, making you feel as if you’re gliding through the air in these Exo Suits. Subtle details, like the gentle hum of crystals in caves and the flowing liquids in Toska, truly bring the environment to life. Coupled with the varying footstep sounds and the impact of your Exo Suits when they land—where audio levels fluctuate based on the size of the dust clouds created—this adds an extra layer of immersion. Additionally, the sounds of enemies and their attacks, along with the booming noises of these massive Titans, seamlessly blend to create a cohesive world.

In addition to their impressive world-building, they have assembled a remarkable roster of skilled voice actors for an indie studio to bring the characters to life. Quirk is voiced by Richard Reed (Overwatch 2, Diablo IV, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2), while Sid is brought to life by Dave Jones (Baldur’s Gate 3, Diablo Immortal, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2), and Visker is portrayed by Patricia Rodriguez (Stellar Blade, Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Aliens vs. Predator). All of this is expertly coordinated by voice director Kirsty Gilmore (Baldur’s Gate 3, Zombieland VR: Headshot Fever, Expeditions: Rome). To top it all off, there is a stunning soundtrack that accompanies you on your adventures and during battles, and trust me, the music is genuinely beautiful, culminating in an outstanding credits track.

In addition to everything else, the team has successfully integrated the bHaptics TactSuit, TactSleeves, and TactVisor. They have seamlessly combined these devices, creating the best experience I’ve ever had. Psytec has incorporated a huge amount of haptic instances into the bHaptics gear, making you truly feel connected to the world of Titan Isles.

The Verdict

Titan Isles undoubtedly stands as the most ambitious game ever developed by Pystec, and they have truly excelled with this title. The game provides immense replay value thanks to the thoughtful choices made to keep the experience feeling new and exciting. Each Exo Suit offers a unique gameplay experience, featuring distinct traversal methods and weaponry that create a delightful mix, making it enjoyable to experiment with each one before choosing your favourite. Furthermore, the game includes various mission routes composed of procedurally generated tiles, ensuring that players will continue to uncover new tiles even after many hours of gameplay. To top it all off, players will engage in epic battles against massive Titans, each possessing their own unique attacks and strategies for defeat, resulting in a fantastic blend of gameplay elements. As you navigate through Toska, every route showcases stunning vistas that are not only enjoyable to traverse but also worth pausing to admire, all enhanced by exceptional audio and a remarkable soundtrack. The team at Psytec has undoubtedly crafted a masterpiece with Titan Isles, which looks impressive on both PC VR and the Meta Quest.
