Review: Eggy

The first time I watched the trailer for Eggy, it brought back cherished memories of Bogo, which has unfortunately been taken off the Oculus store. I felt a surge of joy at the prospect of a new pet simulator making its way to the store, especially in mixed reality this time around.

STORY

A mysterious rift has appeared, connecting your world to the Dragon Realm, and you discover an egg in your home. Suddenly, you become the guardian of a dragon, tasked with nurturing it as it grows and fulfills its destiny. Your support will be crucial for its journey back to the Dragon Realm, where it will carve out its own path.

Help Eggy Fulfil Their Destiny

Rest assured, you won’t have to navigate the journey of raising your dragon alone. You’ll receive a magical Book of Lore that will guide you through the essentials. From there, it’s up to you to nurture your unique Eggy, ensuring it develops and acquires the skills needed to venture out independently.

To achieve this, you’ll need to transform your home into an ideal environment for teaching your dragon to walk, explore, play, and eventually take flight. This involves using hand signals and vocal commands, ensuring that the space is interactive enough for effective training. Your actions will significantly impact its growth. You’ll also want to personalise the area with decorations, provide a cosy sleeping spot and a designated bathroom, and, crucially, include engaging toys to keep your dragon entertained.

As you engage in training, it’s essential to monitor your dragon’s traits on your tablet, including Weight, Happiness, Excitement, Personality, Stress, and Stamina. Strive for a balance among these factors to ensure your dragon remains as happy and calm as possible while you teach Eggy to perform tricks like playing fetch and to sit. Each day you visit, you’ll learn more from the Book of Lore, guiding you in training Eggy and witnessing his growth. Eventually, you’ll prepare him for the day he can leave the nest, marking the completion of your journey together.

You will begin with a starter pack to raise Eggy, but you’ll need to buy additional items using the crystals available in your in-game tablet. Crystals can be earned on certain days you log in and will accumulate in your room for you to collect. They also grow alongside weeds, so maintaining a clean environment is essential for Eggy’s happiness. To keep the room tidy, use the in-game vacuum to clear away crystals, weeds, and, of course, dragon droppings. Once you’ve gathered enough crystals, you’ll have access to a variety of items, including new decorations, toys, care products, and outfits for Eggy.

I have been truly impressed by the effectiveness of the hand-tracking in Eggy, especially since the game relies entirely on this feature. Throughout my experience, I never encountered any tracking issues, and every item felt highly interactive. The only drawback is the absence of tactile feedback that comes with hand-tracking, but that’s simply a limitation of the current technology, not a flaw of the game itself.

A Portal Between Worlds

The game is entirely based on mixed reality, and it’s evident that Spunge Games designed it with this concept in mind from the very beginning. This approach enhances the experience of having a virtual pet, as Eggy interacts and plays within your environment. You can even incorporate a virtual door and window into your space, creating a connection to the Dragon Realm. Through this window, you can enjoy the scenery or observe Eggy as he explores outside, flying around and collecting crystals for you. This feature is incredibly engaging and immersive, allowing you to peer into the outside world through the portal you’ve created.

You can truly appreciate the dedication the team has invested in bringing Eggy to life. His animations enhance the connection you develop with your dragon, whether it’s the joy of playing with toys, soaring through the skies, or simply enjoying some affectionate pats and rubs. The adorable sounds, from playful burps to gentle snores, make him feel like a genuine part of your life. The visual details in Eggy and the various items you can spawn further elevate the immersive experience you seek in a pet simulator.

One of the limitations in the game is that you can only have ten objects in your room at any given time, including any decorative items you wish to use. As a result, you’ll often find yourself swapping items based on Eggy’s needs. For instance, if he has just woken up, you might take away the bed, and when he shows signs of needing rest again, you can put the bed back in after clearing out a toy.

Comfort

The Verdict

Eggy brilliantly transforms the virtual pet experience into a home reality through its innovative use of mixed reality and hand-tracking technology, enhancing the feeling of having a virtual pet far beyond my expectations—all while weaving in a narrative. What truly astonished me was my initial belief that, as an adult, I would quickly lose interest in a game seemingly designed for a younger audience. Instead, I found myself logging in daily to ensure Eggy was content and to bond with my very own dragon. The impressive effort invested in the animations, the diverse interaction methods, the adorable sounds, and the engaging training process make it feel just like having an energetic puppy at home—only with more scales!
