Broken Edge MR Review

The team at Trebuchet have brought their 1v1 sword fighting action game Broken Edge into Mixed Reality using the Meta Quest 3. This update allows you to play everything the games offers in MR. If you would like my full break down of the game, you can find this in my review.

As mentioned every element of the game is available in Mixed Reality mode, meaning you can visit the dojo, take on single-player and multiplayer duels, and it just plays like it would in virtual reality. For the mixed reality to work, a portal is opened in your room. In this portal you can see the games environment in the stereoscopic 3D you would in the VR mode. This will then see the opponent stepping into your actual surroundings as they advance towards you in the portal.

The team have also included a number of options for the mixed reality space, allowing you to amend it to fit perfectly in your playspace. This allows for you to alter the width and the intensity of the portal, and allows for an immersive mode or one the tapers the portal at the end – of which I prefer the later. The reason for this is just feels your opponent is stepping into your playspace more with the tapered look, and feels like a better use of the mixed reality.

THE VERDICT

With how Broken Edge is designed and played, made it perfect for the jump to Mixed Reality. Allowing the team at Trebuchet to bring the whole experience over from VR to MR, and when playing it I find myself playing in mixed reality more than virtual reality. But, if you are going to do this make sure to have a battery pack at the ready, as unfortunately MR will eat the Quest 3’s battery up in no time.
