KIWI Design Quest 2 Charging Dock Review

One thing the Quest 2 is becoming known for is accessories and KIWI Design’s always bring solid accessories in this area. They have now released a changing dock for the HMD and the controllers, but, is this worth the purchase?

What's in the box?

Inside of the box you get the charging dock stand, a magnetic USB-C plug, two replacement battery covers, rechargeable batteries, a power adapter (USB-A) and a USB-A to USB-C cable

Benefits

When it comes to the benefits of the product it offers a great storage solution for both your HMD and controllers that looks stylish along with charging both your devices. As someone who normally just stores my HMD’s on a shelf, how neat it looks on charging dock just looks so much better.

Features

There is some great features on the charging dock that I think are worth a mention. Firstly the one that is just more of an aesthetic thing, it offers seventeen RBG lighting options giving you different colours and transitions.

It comes with powerful magnets for getting for charging the controllers and on the magnetic USB-C plug that is detachable from the arm on on charging dock. Meaning getting the HMD connected up the charging dock is a simple task and causes no damage to the charging port on the headset. The team has also made sure that they have included advanced terminal protection to make sure the device is kept healthy. If you use different facial interfaces on your Quest 2, they also have you covered as they have included a movable button to allow it to fit the charging dock.

However, the feature I like the most on that stand is something so simple, but makes the biggest difference is the three LED’s on the front on the dock. These LED’s indicate each device is on charge, meaning it clearly shows you that you have have everything connected correctly – allowing you to avoid the annoying feeling if one was not connected correctly and not charging.

Testing the product

For the test I allowed both the HMD and rechargeable controller batteries to fully drain in order to get an accurate idea of how long it takes to charge from nothing to full. In this timing I found it took around two and half hours – which is not bad timing at all given it was charging all three items.

Just for fun I thought I would check the magnets strength for the controllers (did not risk the HMD) and lifted and turned the charging dock – of course you would never do this purposely when it’s in use. But, as it’s advertised as having Powerful Magnetic Attraction it was worth a test, while doing this I managed to get the charging dock to about ninety-degrees before the magnetic connection broke on the battery covers and the dock – which is pretty impressive.

Now, there was one issue I came across with testing and that was due to personal preference. This is because I like to use the KIWI Design Extended Controller Grips with my Quest 2 controllers, and these cant be used with the rechargeable batteries with how they charge. Meaning if I wanted to use them, every time I wanted to recharge the batteries it would mean taking off the extended grips and replacing them.
